Small business people are by nature do-it-yourself type people. They start their own businesses, fix their own squeaky doors, pay their own bills and sell their own products and services. When it comes to marketing, many tackle SEO, PPC and Social Media much like they tackled that squeaky door, with a few tools and a little bit of know how.

Unlike that squeaky door, you can do some damage, or cost yourself some money, if you get started down the wrong path. With the door, if it still squeaks you spray it with some stuff, and voila – it’s fixed. With SEO or Local Online Marketing, we’re still looking for that magic spray – unfortunately it doesn’t exist.

So when does it become glaringly obvious you need help? I have some suggestions to get you started down the right path.

Before you Start
The truth is – getting help at the beginning, before you’ve done anything yourself, is probably the most cost effective method. Paying someone like Mary and I to set up your Pay Per Click accounts correctly – and have us take a few hours to train you on maintenance and different tactics can save you hundreds, even THOUSANDS of dollars.  This can also help save you the frustration of trying to set things up properly, but just not having time to educate yourself before-hand.  You’re busy – you’re paying bills and taxes and selling to and servicing your clients.  I can tell you from experience, learning online marketing is a FULL TIME JOB.  If you don’t have hours a week to devote to it, save yourself some cash in the long run and have someone get you set up for success.

Some Signs It’s Time for Help

  • Do you look at your monthly credit card statement and cringe at that line item from Google AdWords and think ‘I need to do something with that’ but haven’t in a few months?  It’s time for help.
  • Do you have a list of keywords your’e interested in, but have done nothing with them for 3+ months – it’s time for help.
  • Did you try to claim your local business listing in Google and now you’re nowhere to be found?  Call us – you need help.  This happens a lot – don’t think you’re the only one with this issue, we fix these all the time!
  • Are you considering giving the Yellow Pages a ton of money for online marketing?  STOP – call us first!  This is throwing good money after bad – the truth is, this type of advertising can do more harm than help for a locally-focused small business.
